Shreya Patel's 'Girl Up' Stop Human Trafficking

Mon. Jan 21, 2019 6:30-9:00 pm, Brooklin High School.
Join us for a screening of Shreya Patel's documentary 'Girl Up' & panel of Durham Region human trafficking experts.
This short film depicts what human trafficking looks like within a Canadian Context. In the documentary, Emily Forward, a Scarborough native shares her story of how she became trafficked. She explains the stages she experienced of recruitment, movement, and exploitation. The film showcases how human trafficking happens in Canada and how it can happen in any area like a high school in Scarborough, or the financial district in Toronto.
After the film we have an panel of local experts to answer your questions about human trafficking in Durham Region. We are excited to be partnering with members of the Durham Region Coalition to end Human Trafficking, Durham Region Police, Bethesda House, Lakeridge Health & Victim Services to help answer your questions about human trafficking in our community.
Attendees of the event should expect to learn what human trafficking looks like in Canada. The event is open to all ages should a parent feel their child is interested in attending. While we understand the topic is sensitive, it is also important for children to be aware of what human trafficking looks like as they may be the first to identify a concerning situation of a peer.
All proceeds of the event will go to support youth in our community. The Optimist club of Brookin is pleased to bring this unique educational opportunity to our community.
If you or someone you know would like to attend but is unable to purchase a ticket please contact the organizer Denise Laframboise at to be added to the attendance list.

An Optimist is a member of a community service club geared to help the youth in the local community. Each club runs hands-on programs most needed by the community as decided by its club members. By being a member of an Optimist club the member grows as an individual by learning more about their community, gaining many friends with similar goals and improving the community that he or she lives in.

Consider not only the benefit to the youth of the Brooklin area, but the fun and fellowship that you will receive by being a member of the Optimist Club with its motto "Bringing Out the Best in Kids". Contact us to receive a club meeting invitation or attend an activity to see Optimism in action. We look forward to talking with you!

Optimist International (OI) was founded on June 19, 1919 and there are now 70,000 members in 3,000 clubs who are helping youth.
